Code Name: the Painters

Before the German surrender in 1945, the former Allies secretly competed with each other to control Europe. It was a time when there was no special relationship between Britain, America or the Soviet Union. Former German officers were recruited by all sides to fight for their new masters, sometimes with horrific results. Under the Yalta Agreement, Greece was to come under British influence but instead a murderous civil war erupted as the former allies gave their support to different militia. This was the beginning of the Cold War. The actions of the right wing resulted in horrific massacres of whole villages that are remembered, even to this day, as the December event, or Dekemvriana. This was a dark time when many of the allies recruited former enemies to work for their secret services and carry out assassinations, murders and regime changes. One such organisation, the American-run Gladio, removed many socialists whom they thought undermined American influences in Europe. Code Name: the Painters follows one clandestine unit controlled by Churchill that tried to keep Greece free and democratic.   What happened to the world after World War II? Did lives go back to normal? Did the countries really make peace with each other? Code Name: The Painters takes us back to the days after peace has been declared and gives the reader an insight of what was happening in the world, and throws up many surprising facts. The world was still a very dangerous place, with dark forces at work in the most unexpected places. The book gives a glimpse of how the war was still being fought, with covert operations and bands of brave men and women, willing to pay the ultimate sacrifice so that ordinary people could live in a democratic world.
