During the early 1900’s life isn’t easy for Jews living in The Pale of Settlement in Russia, always at the mercy of the Czar’s laws and harassing soldiers. Esther’s parents decide to seek a better life in America. Her father leaves first and once he’s saved enough money, sends for his family. Though sad to say good bye to her village, Esther is delighted they are going to a place where girls, too, may attend school.
With help from friends as well as strangers, Esther, her mama and her sister Sarah travel by night and stay out of sight by day. They elude soldiers, endure harsh challenges and persevere with strong determination. Once aboard ship for the Atlantic crossing they believe their problems are behind them. They quickly learn they’re not.
They finally arrive at Ellis Island, eager to plant the seeds of their new life in American soil. But their dream is put in jeopardy when yet another obstacle threatens their entry to the United States.
Experience this authentic, slice of history through Esther's compelling story.
