The first Medium Tank M4 “General Sherman” tanks rolled off the production line in February 1942, remained in production for the rest of World War II, and were still in service two decades later. Almost unwittingly it became the most important weapon the US Army deployed on the land battlefield. Production exceeded 49,000, but it also had glaring weaknesses. Sherman Tank follows the weapon’s development and numerous modifications, telling its story through both technical data and the words of the soldiers who fought in it.
