The Rideau Canal

In 2007, the Rideau Canal and Kingston Fortifications were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A trip to any of the 24 lockstations along the 202-kilometre waterway, or to Fort Henry and the Martello towers in Kingston, reveals why the Rideau has earned this distinction. The historical sites are remarkably well-preserved and the canal system continues to operate almost exactly as it did when completed in 1832.
Rideau Canal: A Historical Guide was written and illustrated to provide visitors with a historical overview of the waterway's origins, the story of its supervising engineer and creator Lt.-Col. John By, as well as insights into its operations and construction. The book contains dozens of full-colour photos of the canal as it looks today and historical paintings from the time of its building.
