The metropolis in southern Germany is one of the Federal Republic’s most prominent hotbeds of architecture. The stellar ascent of Munich to the capital of Bavaria began in 1158 when it was granted the status of market town. Its architectural landmarks range from the Cathedral of Our Dear Lady and the Residence to the Allianz-Arena and the BMW World, the most famous examples of recent architecture.
The experts Nicolette Baumeister and Chris van Uffelen take readers on a journey of discovery across all architectural eras. In addition to the most important 300 buildings in Munich itself, the book also presents around 90 architectural masterpieces in Upper Bavaria, one of Germany’s most popular tourist destinations. The chronologically structured chapters and the colored illustrations vividly present the characteristic features of each era. In addition to individual buildings, important ensembles and the key architects of Munich are featured.

With the Olympic movement in constant danger of terrorist disruption, and with the fortieth anniversary of the 1972 tragedy upon us in 2012, the Munich story is more timely than ever.

“An utterly original and gripping story of murder on the high seas.”
— Sebastian Junger
From an author praised by the Wall Street Journal for his “eye for a good story” comes an account of Herbert Fuller tragedy of 1896, a tragedy that occurred on the high seas and one involving the senseless slaughter of three of the twelve souls on board. Stunned by this act of random violence, and in sure knowledge that one or more of their own was the murderer, the living turn the vessel to shore, 750 miles distant.
In the nightmarish days and nights of suspense that follow, first one and then another of the remaining nine is seized by others as the culprit. Upon reaching port, however, all are under suspicion—until the man most likely to have committed the act is, for reasons having to do with race, exonerated and the man most likely to be innocent, prosecuted.
At the center of this gripping and gruesome story is the first mate Thomas Bram, whose subsequent murder trials became as widely followed by the press and public as was the famous trial of Lizzie Borden just a few years before. Unlike the Borden case, remembered today in books, movies, and children’s rhymes, the Bram case was almost lost to the collective memory. Fortunately, C. Michael Hiam, in the manner of Erik Larson, now brings it to life.

Specifically, a 1930s Murder Mystery Weekend, to be held at Madingly Grange, his aunt's superbly hideous gothic mansion. Simon and his sister are meant to be house-sitting, but surely Aunt Maude would not begrudge them the chance to earn a few nearly honest shekels. Simon's grand plans quickly go awry, beginning with the guests?each one dottier than the last?and moving on to the staff, hired on the cheap and with larcenous plans of their own. And when an actual body turns up, Simon's charade of detection is suddenly forced to begin in earnest.

Murder Capital explores Prohibition-era Madison, Wisconsin. Per capita, Madison was the most violent and deadly city in the United States during the 1920s. Along with the usual suspects (bootleggers), Madison was unique in its strong Ku Klux Klan presence. In effect, he tied his own hands and the violence was allowed to continue unabated.

One of the most widely read authors in the Netherlands, A.C. Baantjer continues to captivate a growing audience of American readers. This volume contains two of his favorite stories.
The truth about one of Britain's most infamous race murders has never been revealed. At around midnight on May 17 1959, a white gang ambushed 32-year-old Antiguan carpenter Kelso Cochrane on a Notting Hill slum street. After a brief scuffle one of them plunged a knife into his heart. The impact was as profound as the aftershock of Stephen Lawrence's murder more than forty years later. The previous summer Notting Hill had been convulsed by race riots. The fascists Sir Oswald Mosley and Colin Jordan were agitating in the area. So the news of an innocent back man stabbed in west London reverberated from Whitehall to the Caribbean. And when the police failed to catch the killer, many black people believed it would have been different if the victim had been white. Murder in Notting Hill is a tale of crumbling tenements transformed into a millionaires' playground, of the district's fading white working class, and of a veil finally being lifted on the past. Part whodunnit, part social history, it reveals startling new evidence about the murder.
This is the first book to examine murder through the written word--not only the writings of the killers themselves, but also the story of murder as told in literary fiction and the crime dramas that are now a staple of film and television. The authors--a criminologist specializing in cold cases, written evidence, and forensic science, and an anthropologist who has dealt with the signs and ciphers of organized crime and street gangs in his previous work--are widely recognized experts in this emerging specialty field. Based on extensive research and interviews with convicted murderers, the book emphasizes the often-overlooked narrative impulse that drives killers, with the authors explaining how both mass and serial murderers perceive their crimes as stories and why a select few are compelled to commit these stories to writing whether before, during, or after their horrific acts.
The book also analyzes the written work of killers, using a combination of machine-based linguistic patterning, predictive modeling, and symbolic interpretation, to make sense of the screeds of everyone from the Son of Sam and the Zodiac Killer to the Columbine attackers, the Unabomber, and the recent spate of mass shooters using social media as their preferred narrative platform. They present a theoretical perspective of murder that is based on both the criminological evidence and written works. In addition, the authors examine famous literature that has dealt ingeniously with murder and its relationship with real crime, from the Greek tragedians to Truman Capote to modern-day productions such as Making a Murderer.
This unique approach offers a new means to penetrate the minds of murderers, revealing their motives as well as the wider social meanings of this age-old crime and our continuing fascination with it.
Television news anchor Robert Jordan Jr. draws from forty-seven years of news experiences to provide an eye-opening look at how news programs decide which murders to cover and which ones to ignore. Jordan takes readers behind the scenes into the big city newsrooms of Chicago. Here split-second decisions are made on where to send limited resources when dozens of shootings and several murders are occurring on a daily basis.
Using interviews from decision makers--such as assignment editors and producers--who work daily in the trenches of working newsrooms, the reader learns how they decide where to send reporters; when to dispatch live trucks; and how the stories will be treated as they are placed in the news programming. Why will one story get "breaking news" banners and be placed at the top of the broadcast while others may not make the air at all or may be given casual mention in later segments?
Additionally, Jordan reveals the results of a ground-breaking questionnaire sent to producers and assignment editors at Chicago television stations to assess their rationales for covering murder stories the way they do.
Finally, he examines how the explosion of social media platforms has changed the dynamic of reporting the news and why murders are the perfect stories for television, as news organizations struggle to survive.

One hundred years earlier, a beautiful guest had disappeared from the wealthy Vauregard household, along with the second volume in a set of the collected works of Byron. Improbably enough, both guest and book seem to have reappeared, with neither having aged a day. The elderly Mr. Vauregard is inclined to believe the young woman's story of having vacationed on an astral plane. But his dubious niece calls in Henry Gamadge, gentleman-sleuth, expert in rare books, and sufficiently well-bred to avoid distressing the Vauregard sensibilities. As Gamadge soon discovers, the household includes an aging actress with ties to a spiritualist sect and a shy beauty with a shady (if crippled) fiance. As always in this delightful series, Gamadge comes up trumps, but only after careful study of the other players' cards.

Comic and television star Tim Conway (McHale’s Navy, The Carol Burnett Show, The Apple Dumpling Gang) enjoyed enormous popular appeal, including a wide readership for his best-selling memoir, What’s So Funny? In her own humorous, loving and surprising memoir, Tim’s eldest child Kelly reveals that the Conway home life was as riotous and engaging as some of her father’s best-known comedy sketches. Kelly Conway allows readers an intimate look at a supremely American childhood, from the studios of Television City in Los Angeles to the Midwestern pleasures of her mom and dad’s home towns. My Dad’s Funnier Than Your Dad is her love letter to her father and mother, as well as an account of the warm, laugh-filled world in which she spent her childhood. The book portrays a Cheaper by the Dozen-style upbringing, when she and her five younger brothers spent their lives playing together within a protective cocoon of affection and love. Her dad acted as the ringmaster of their circus. What kind of dad builds his kids a go-cart track in the backyard of his Encino residence by himself, himself, not hiring a crew of professionals to do it? How about a dad that circles the block when his kids go away for our first day in grade school, fretting and fussing that we’re okay away from home? What can you say about a famous father who lived not for his celebrity but kept himself firmly grounded in family? While not all puppy dogs and rainbows—the Conways divorced when the author was seventeen—this is nevertheless warm-hearted memoir of a man who was as funny off the set as on.

She then branches out into more mysterious areas such as creativity and the perception of time.

As a chess player, Aron Nimzowitsch (1886-1935) belonged to the very best. In his peak years the Latvian-born maestro was ranked third in the world behind Capablanca and Alekhine. However, Nimzowitsch will first and foremost be remembered as the founder of the Hypermodern movement and the author of two undisputed classics.
In My System he expounded his theories of prophylaxis, blockades and much more, while providing ground-breaking insights in pawn-structures. In the sequel Chess Praxis, Nimzowitsch demonstrated how he had successfully tested his theories in his games.
Without reading Nimzowitsch your chess education cannot be complete. Perhaps not all of his convictions have stood the test of time, but even today, any chess student will deepen his understanding while enjoying the author's insights and witticisms. Part of the charm of Nimzowitsch's prose was his idiosyncratic use of the German language, which has carefully been preserved in Robert Sherwood's new translation.
Bonus: Added are the influential essays The Blockade and On the History of the Chess Revolution 1911-1914. This edition gives the reader access to Nimzowitsch's four major works!

The party comes to a screeching halt, however, when a dead body turns up in a sculptor’s studio.

George Chakiris famously played the angry gang leader Bernardo in the film version of West Side Story (1961), for which he won an Oscar for best supporting actor. My West Side Story, is an insider’s look at how this theatrical and cinematic landmark evolved from a conversation in Jerome Robbins' Manhattan apartment between him, Arthur Laurents and Leonard Bernstein to ten Oscars, three Golden Globes, two Tony Awards, and a Grammy. While also a memoir of Chakiris’s long and distinguished career, the emphasis is on West Side Story, which will be revived on Broadway in December of this year. Here are profiles of the film’s stars and directors, from the “wonderful” Natalie Wood and “lovely” Richard Beymer, to the mercurial Jerome Robbins and “passionate” Rita Moreno, with whom Chakiris remains friends. “I know exactly where my gratitude belongs,” Chakiris writes, “and I still marvel at how, unbeknownst to me at the time, the joyful path of my life was paved one night in 1949 when Jerome Robbins sat Leonard Bernstein and Arthur Laurents down in his apartment and announced, ‘I have an idea.’"

Almost every religious mythology contains the primordial motif of death and rebirth and portrays the posthumous journey of the deceased following death. Myths of the afterlife exist in all cultures, including that of the ancient Greeks and Egyptians, Babylonians, Romans and Celts and continue to manifest in living faiths such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Although human consciousness has evolved over time, the mystery of death remains beyond rational perception and gives rise to feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. Inquiring whether death may be a transition to rebirth requires looking back into the universal language of myth, which symbolizes the germ of life existing in an afterlife state. As will be shown, this ancient model of the otherworldly journey and resurrection continues to appear in the near-death experience.

V.S. Naipaul once described his purpose as an author as nothing less than a "commitment to deliver the truth." One of the world's greatest, and most controversial, living writers, he has written extensively about the enduring economic, cultural, and psychological effects of colonialism, particularly its assaults on individual identity. In Naipaul's Truth, Lillian Feder, noted author of several classic works of literary criticism, explores Naipaul's writings to deliver an original and beautifully written analysis of her subject. Feder describes Naipaul's methods for discovering the truth about himself and the world he explores, and she concludes that Naipaul's literature has rightfully earned a place in the upper echelons of the modern canon. Simultaneously an intellectual biography and a revealing psychological portrait of the artist, Naipaul's Truth is a masterpiece of literary biography.

Once a major whaling center, Nantucket today draws thousands to its New England shores as one of America's leading summer resorts. The author gives guided tour of the homes of such noted families as the Macys, the Folgers and the Starbucks.
Nantucket Island has just more than 10,000 year-round residents — and a sizeable population of very real ghosts. The 44 tales in this book were collected as oral history. Some of these spirits are benign, even protective; others terrorize the humans who encounter them. All are memorable.
What makes Nantucket special and memorable to visitors and residents alike? Is it the compass rose mural painted on the side of the current Ralph Lauren building, noting distances to world cities? Is it the sperm whale skeleton hanging in Nantucket Whaling Museum? Maybe the iron fountain-urn in Main Street or the pump in the ‘Sconset Square. For some it might be Altar Rock, or the African Meeting House, or the Maria Mitchell Observatory. Through counting to 100, this book embraces those objects and more by signifying the unique culture and history of Nantucket.

Napoleon and The Shroud is the previously untold story of two of the most remarkable giants of the modern world. It is an inspiring account not only of Napoleon’s own faith in the one of the greatest military generals searching for answers in the mysterious burial shroud of Christendom’s prince of peace shroud and its power but also of how he was able to secretly take possession of the religious relic with the assistance of Pope Pius VII — who owed his papacy and restoration of the church’s role in France to Bonaparte, whose coupe d’état in 1799 halted the anti-Catholic policies of the French Revolution and began the Napoleonic era in which France would come to dominate much of continental Europe. In this first modern history of Napoleon and the Church, Tony Castro carefully demonstrates how Bonaparte’s vision of bringing religious and social peace to France solidified among the French his own position as a ruler endowed with divine favor and protection, while also forging a new nation out of the ashes of the revolution in which at least 17,000 had been executed at the guillotine. a biography of Bonaparte’s fascination with Jesus Christ, the man and divinity at the heart of his Catholicism, which defined both him and his rule in dramatic fashion that has never been fully explained. Now in this groundbreaking study, Napoleon and the Shroud lays out how Christ’s sacred burial cloth shaped and influenced Bonaparte and how he used his obsession with it to maximize his power.
The masterful saga of Bonaparte's twenty-six military Marshals by Napoleonic authority Delderfield is set against the dramatic backdrop of the French Revolution, Napoleon's rise and his conquests, and the restoration of the Bourbon monarchs.
A new theory on the cause of Napoleon's death. Untangles the medical evidence and knowledge of the day. Other chapters cover a wide variety of medico-historical topics, from the cultural aspects of aging to the health of Marcus Aurelius.

This report attempts to put the Caspian Basin and Central Asia into a comprehensive strategic perspective at a time when NATO is increasingly concerned with challenges on its periphery. The authors examine NATO's interests, capabilities, and constraints as well as th e salient trends and factors shaping the regional security environment. In spite of the region's potential energy riches and the jockeying for influence among major powers and oil interests, the authors suggest that NATO should see the region as a potential quagmire rather than as a vacuum waiting to be filled. The report discusses Western objectives and interests in the Caspian, internal and intraregional threats to Western interests, the competition for influence among outside powers, transnational threats, Caspian oil and energy security, and implications for NATO and Western policy and planning. The authors conclude that the West has limited interests
In the coming decade, NATO faces growing fiscal austerity and declining defense budgets. This study analyzes the impact of planned defense budget cuts on the capabilities of seven European members of NATO:
the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, and Poland. The authors assess the implications of the cuts for NATO capabilities and strategy and for U.S. policy.
NATO enlargement reflects a failure on the part of policymakers to recognize new strategic realities—and that failure could have dangerous unintended consequences.

The security environment facing the U.S. and NATO in Europe is changing in fundamental ways, including a steady growth of security challenges emanating from Europe's southern periphery-around the Mediterranean and beyond. This study explores this phenomenon, with special attention to transregional risks, Turkey's Alliance role and need for redefinition, the risk of a Greek-Turkish conflict, the Mediterranean dimension of NATO adaptation, and what these issues might mean for U.S. and NATO strategy. Areas for future research include lessons of Kosovo for basing and access, the role of air power based in Turkey,a nd potential USAF contributions to Greek-Turkish risk reduction.

In the 1990s, NATO began a course of enlargement and transformation to remain relevant in Europe's post Cold War security environment. As part of its commitment to enlargement, it admitted three new members—Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic in 1999 and has plans to admit more countries in the future. NATO's enlargement has profound military implications for the U. S. and its allies in terms of future planning and shaping strategies. Both have been driven primarily by political imperatives, not by a sense of direct threat, but by an environment-shaping agenda of democratization and integration. This report develops and applies an analytical framework for thinking about the determinants of future NATO enlargement, the specific defense challenges they pose, and shaping policies that might aid in addressing these challenges.
Events after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War have shown the need for a transformed NATO. The author's analysis finds that the military forces of NATO's member states should be ready for expeditionary operations, which will require expanding and modernizing forces; NATO must be able to deter and defeat chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons; and U.S. forces in Europe are invaluable assets for shaping behaviors and expectations in the region and for responding to challenges in and around Europe. The future will demand effective and coordinated action by nations with common interests, and for the United States and its allies, NATO is by far the best vehicle available. A key factor will be the Europeans' willingness to accept greater responsibility for the defense of common interests outside of the treaty area, perhaps beyond Europe itself. Investment in military capabilities as needed is called for.
Since 1989, NATO has concentrated most of its energy on enlargement to Eastern Europe and internal adaption; the Mediterranean has received only sporadic attention.
This report examines the impact of renewed tension between NATO and Russia on key allies and partners in central and northeastern Europe to identify how changes in their interests, strategies, and capabilities affect U.S. partnering in the region.

For thousands of years we have tried to study, interpret and teach ourselves ABOUT Nature from our own point of view, through the lenses of our telescopes, microscopes and binocular eyesight directed outwards. We see a rigidly framed objective picture ‘out there’ that does not include our selves yet upon which we project our own image and psychology. This one-way view has brought us into profound conflict with our natural origins and one another. ‘NaturesScope’ evokes a different view, FROM Nature, which brings human beings and the world into empathic mutual relationship. It assists us in enquiring imaginatively and creatively into how to turn the narrowed down objective worldview around and see our selves and our world through nature’s fluid lens of mutual inclusion. People who have experienced this view of natural inclusion have found it a source of profound inspiration.
