Eric Perry is Lewis Creek's resident bad boy. When he's named the new starting pitcher in a town that thinks baseball is everything, and he is nothing but trouble, Eric knows he has to clean up his act. Lay low, his coach tells him--at least long enough to actually pitch a game. But when a fight with his teammate lands him in jail yet again, his season may be over before it starts...until his next door neighbor, Bri, comes to the rescue. Making a deal with Eric's coach, she offers him one final chance at redemption: community service. Bri Johnson hadn’t talked to Eric in months. Her boyfriend Matt, Eric’s teammate and the school’s golden boy, didn’t like her to be around Eric. Matt didn’t like a lot of things Bri did or said or wore, which is why she ends it with him the same night he and Eric get into a fight--a fight over her. That night is the reason Bri offers to take Eric with her to the community center each week, so he can keep his spot on the team. But spending time with Eric only makes her life worse, as scandalous rumors start flying and Matt refuses to let her move on. While Eric and Bri work closely together at the center, old stories of stargazing, first kisses, and a time when they were friends start to re-connect them. As they open up their secrets and their hearts to each other, they start to see that they are more than what other people think they are--and even more than what they think about themselves.
This book examines the connections and interrelationships at play between gender inequality, popular culture and resistance on the basis of case studies conducted in the district of Bankura, an area well known for its tradition and variety of popular culture. In contemporary India, gender-based prejudice is perhaps the most pervasive form of inequality, arguably more so in the rural society of Bengal where the deep rooted and complex forms of gender inequality are largely reproduced and legitimized in popular culture. Gender Inequality, Popular Culture and Resistance in Bankura District argues that if the exercise of power inherently involves resistance, then gender power is countered by some aspects of popular culture in favour of a more equitable relationship between men and women. The text also examines resistance to the ideological forms of gender bias and inequality depicted in popular culture such as folk songs, riddles, rhymes and proverbs operative in the rural society of Bankura and explores the intimate connection between popular culture and the everyday life of the general population.
Gender, Space and Creative Imagination is about contemporary women’s writing in India and its experiential, ideological and representational topography. It offers a nuanced critique of the gender-space dialectics that underlines and often engages the attention of women writers in this country.

Genealogies are studied not merely as a representation of royalty but also to understand the historical processes of identity constructions which constantly changed in time and space.

For a lot of girls, being born into the fifties would be hard. For Patricia, the fourth eldest child in a family of eleven children and the eldest girl of three daughters, this usually rang true, meaning that she had very little childhood. Where there are lots of siblings there are lots of rows and feuding, and that was certainly the case in Patricia's life. She didn't have any freedom until she married in the seventies, and though this was her happiest time, taking on the role of both wife and mother, it wasn't always plain sailing. There were both money and health problems. But the real problems would come in her late forties, where her world would come tumbling down, pitching her into her deepest and darkest place yet...

Challenge and adversity are both part of life. But for little Harrison, they hit hard the day after he was born. Faced with a serious case of bacterial meningitis, his life was hanging in the balance. Typically bacterial meningitis has a 48 hour window before it becomes terminal. With only a few hours to spare, he received heavy doses of the appropriate medicine that would hopefully help save his life. Luckily, he survived but then faced a difficult physical challenge known as cerebral palsy. His pediatrician and a neurologist reported to his parents when Harrison was just a few months old, "Your boy will never run or kick a ball. He simply won't have the physical coordination due to his severe case of cerebral palsy.” Yet through persistence, faith, love, grace, and his world travels, Harrison was able to cure himself of the "incurable."
Today, Harrison is a 12 year old boy that looks acts, walks and talks like every other kid at school. To see the journey of where he came from and what he went through is nothing shy of miraculous. Harrison shares his story with pictures and a witty commentary in his book, The Boy Who Would Never Run.

Attuned to a world of natural signs – the stars, the winds, the curl of ocean swells - Polynesian explorers navigated for thousands of miles without charts or instruments. They sailed against prevailing winds and currents aboard powerful double canoes to settle the vast Pacific Ocean. And they did this when Greek mariners still hugged the coast of an inland sea and Europe was populated by stone-age farmers. Yet by the turn of the twentieth century, this story had been lost and Polynesians had become an oppressed minority in their own land. Then, in 1975, a replica of an ancient Hawaiian canoe – Hōkūle‘a - was launched to once again sail the ancient star paths and help Hawaiians reclaim pride in the accomplishments of their ancestors. Hawaiki Rising tells this story in the words of the men and women who sailed aboard Hōkūle‘a. They speak of growing up at a time when their Hawaiian culture was in danger of extinction and their future in their own land was uncertain. We join the founders of the Polynesian Voyaging Society as their vision of Hōkūle‘a takes shape in a Honolulu shipyard. We sail on the first voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti in 1976; experience the heartbreaking loss of Eddie Aikau in a courageous effort to save his crewmates when Hōkūle‘a capsized; and are present as new leaders vow to continue sailing to honor Eddie’ life. We are with Nainoa Thompson as he searches the heavens to rediscover ancient star signs and we sail with him as he guides Hōkūle‘a to Tahiti – the first Hawaiian to navigate the Pacific without charts or instruments in a thousand years. When Hokule’a crew member Sam Ka‘ai carved the male ki’i (sculpted figure) that adorns the canoe’s starboard hull, he envisioned modern day Hawaiians in the figure of a blind man reaching to the heavens. Hawaiki Rising is the saga of an astonishing revival of indigenous culture by voyagers who took hold of the old story and sailed deep into their ancestral past.

The Hutterites have withdrawn themselves from society to live communally in their secluded farming communities. Their colonies dot the landscape throughout middle and western Canada, and upper Midwest and northwest United States. The Amish, Mennonites, and Hutterites all came from the Anabaptist movement and consider themselves spiritual cousins. Unlike the Amish, the Hutterites openly embrace the very latest of mechanical and electronic technology, while claiming to be thoroughly separated from the world and all its ways. This is a true story of nine courageous people who escaped the rigors of religiosity within a system in which they were born and raised. Choosing life outside of the colony cost them the future of family ties and the places they once called home. They were soon confronted with unimaginable obstacles as they were thrust into the 'English world'. Each of the Nine pen their own personal account of how they found freedom from the system which held them in bondage. Boldly, they expose the lies and deceptions they were raised to believe and proclaim the truth which sets men free.
HypnoSize Yourself: Increase Your Vitality—Release The Weight With Self-Hypnosis is written for those searching for an alternative solution to their weight or food issues and desire to move beyond their old way of thinking. People are seeking new options to help them release excess pounds and take back control of their health. This book is intended for serious-minded individuals seeking to improve their health and increase their vitality through the power of their own mind.
In this book, you will learn how to “HypnoSize Yourself,” meaning that with the use of self-hypnosis, you can be your ideal size. I specifically use the term “Release The Weight” rather than “lose the weight” as there is a big difference between releasing weight and losing weight. The mind is inclined to find what is lost. It is no surprise, then, that many who “lose” weight seem to find it again! “Release The Weight” is an easier concept for the mind to accept. The term, “Increase Your Vitality” is used to remind the reader this book is not only about weight. Vibrant health, higher levels of energy and feeling alive are ultimate rewards for making mindset and lifestyle changes.
HypnoSize Yourself is a message not only of hope, but a survey of actual tools and techniques that can help a person release their weight and improve their life; however, this book is only part of the solution. The other part is YOU, the reader: you must want to make changes and be willing to take action.

In Defence of Honour and Justice focuses on the ‘sepoy’ rebellions of the nineteenth century as an entry point into the wider dynamics of the pre-1857 colonial armies. Delving beyond the usual binaries of discipline and indiscipline, which tend to draw a linear teleology between the localized mutinies in the colonial armies and 1857, it seeks to explore the broader issues these mutinies raise about the colonial armies, and issues like the prevalence of certain notions of honour and justice among the ‘sepoys’ in the nineteenth century.
In 2010, Rev. Chuck Davis and Eric Kampmann began recording daily podcasts. Those recordings were designed as informal, daily conversations built around a short verse from the wisdom books in the Old Testament. The recordings were available through a website but did not begin to publicize the podcasts to the Stanwich Church community until January of 2012. This new book is a compilation of the biblical passages discussed in the 2013 daily recordings. A title and commentary have been added to each passage to suggest a starting point for discussion or further study. Some features include: A study of the birth narrative Studies of the disciples A complete study of Passion Week
This compact novel is a sharp read that few will be able to put down.
The book’s central concern lies in conceptualizing a specically contemporary and artistic history of the urban festival. In keeping with its title, the book examines the diversity of images and practices – from the consumerist spectacle and the bonanza of awards to the eorescence of public installations and art and craft productions – that unfurls in this season ‘in the name of the goddess’. While proling the Durga Pujas as Kolkata’s biggest public art event, the book also addresses the ambivalence of the designations of ‘art’ and ‘artist’ in this eld of production and viewership. One of the main aims of this study has been to lay open the claims of ‘art’ in this festival both as a set of insistent projections as well as a mesh of incomplete formations. The new artistic nomenclature of the festival, it is shown, is not easily secured and has to struggle to assert itself within the body of the religious event and the ephemeral mass spectacle.

This collection of essays explores the shared values of Central Asia and India and the common approach of a non-conflict model of international relations. Derivative is a financial instrument whose value is derived from some other asset called the underlying. In commodity derivative markets raw products are traded. These commodities are traded on regulated commodity exchanges, in which they are bought and sold in standardized contracts. This study is interesting in as much as it provides a detailed analysis of commodity derivatives which were traditionally developed for risk management purposes are now growing in popularity as an investment tool. Also by critically examining the demarcation between the commodity and the security market, this book puts in perspective the need for the integration of the two markets, which would enable both the markets to benefit from economies of scale and also from the synergy generated.

India’s Indigenous Medical Systems: A Cross-Disciplinary Approach brings together in one volume, essays by historians, botanists and physicians of indigenous as well as Western medicine to show how Indian medicine evolved, constantly adapting itself to the challenges posed by Western medical science. This book dicusses the origin and growth of Indo-Persian historiography with particular emphasis on India’s contribution to the literary heritage of the Persian world. It also evaluates the important changes that the writing of history underwent as it developed within the Indian environment. Besides a discussion of the methods employed by the Indo-Persian historians, the book focuses, for the first time, on an important contemporary work, Awfi’s Jawami’ul-Hikayat-waLivam’ul-Rivaayat as a source for the study of the history of the social and political developments in the Islamic world. This enlarged edition also examines the poet ‘Isami’s Futuhus-Salatin that chronicles the reign of the Sultans from the eleventh to fourteenth centuries, and is remarkable for the details of the political and social developments that took place in south India after its annexation to the Sultanate of Delhi.

Carly Mason is a successful New York City forensic dentist. She and her widower husband, Gabe Berk, are trying to start a family. Thinking they had exhausted the options by consulting with all of Manhattan’s fertility experts, Carly and Gabe learn of an eccentric scientist who runs an exclusive clinic. The doctor commits to helping the couple conceive the baby they so desperately want, but only if they agree to what seems like an outrageous stipulation; Carly must carry twins, one biological and one that she is a surrogate for. Once the twins are born Carly has to surrender the non-biological twin to the doctor at birth, no questions asked. Further, should the old doctor die before Carly gives birth, she has to agree to give the baby the name chosen by the doctor.
As required for treatment, Carly and Gabe move into a new house, which is within thirty minutes of the clinic. They soon discover that their new home and town, Island Bluffs, are far from ordinary. Carly and Gabe feel eyes spying on them at every turn. Gabe’s father, Yehuda, hears strange noises that only he can hear. Megan, Gabe’s rebellious sixteen-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, is attracted to the son of a Neo-Nazi. The mysteries continue to deepen as a scavenger ship appears on nearby waters searching for sunken treasure along with glimpses of a lone swimmer lumbering through the waves of Barnegat Bay.
Island Bluffs is a present-day town bound to the past by horrible secrets and pacts made long ago. Keeping secrets buried as some had hoped was no longer an option for the Berks. Their new and some thought long-forgotten home made that impossible by putting them squarely in the middle of it all. When the truths are revealed, the shocking twists and turns will challenge the very notions of what is right and wrong.

High school junior Trisha Myles thought her sister loved her, but her sister's suicide note revealed that she'd wished Trisha had never existed. In the aftermath, Trisha abandons her old life to become a social ghost. Not existing is sort of peaceful... until a vicious bully targets her.
She’s saved by Jesse Reagan--the one guy in Hoghfield, Alabama who outranks her as an outcast. Trisha’s desire to live blossoms, but spending time with Jesse is more than she bargained for. After she freaks over the slashes on his arms, he explains he’s cursed--a curse that can only be controlled by blood magic. Trisha thinks he’s insane--especially when he tells her someone has cursed her, too. But when freak accidents almost crush Jesse with a truck and destroy her attempts to reclaim her old life, Trisha knows it’s not just a delusion.
A ritual can free them from their curses, but only if they can shed their guilt and anger. However, if Trisha and Jesse can’t let go, the curse will bleed Jesse dry, and Trisha will lose the person who brought her back to life.
Exploring the mind of the cat, Dr. Teed describes what can be learned from understanding this most mysterious of creatures. She explores the body-mind-soul connection and notes that what feeds the mind and soul is often deficient in the modern world we have constructed for ourselves and our cats. These deficiencies then become written on the body. She feels a more integrated body-mind-soul approach to care for our felines is what is needed now for the modern cat. Describing cats as motivational or inspirational speakers who can teach us how to live a life worth living, Dr. Teed relates how she observed first-hand, time and time again, the positive power of the cat to affect change in small spheres. She reflects on what an amazing thing it would be if we were all a bit more cat-like.

In Lexi and Lister Defeat Death, Lexi lives with Agnes and “Dr. Joe” Lister, the Father of Modern Surgery. Dr. Joe’s concern about deadly infections following surgery, and his work with scientists Thomas Anderson and Louis Pasteur, lead him to develop antiseptic methods to prevent infection. His first case is their mischievous kitten Bart “the Brat” and his second is 11 year old Jimmy Greensley. As word of Dr. Joe’s success spreads, he becomes the victim of ridicule. But Dr. Joe’s perseverance and confidence in his new life-saving techniques win over the medical community.
Lexi and Lister Defeat Death is a work of fiction that is entertaining for children. It also contains a non-fiction section (the Pawscript) that acts as a resource for teachers, providing well-researched educational information.
Through the eyes, ears, and tail of Lexi Catt, Marian Keen brings to life the wonderful story of the Curies, told in an engaging style for children. Keen skilfully weaves the difficulties experienced by women of the era into her story and shows how Marie and her daughters’ dedication, skills, and knowledge helped them overcome these. Keen’s telling of the work of Marie and the “petites Curies” during World War I is remarkable in its emotive immediacy—the reader is carried along with them. Keen combines the history of war, the history of science, and the attitudes of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in a way that is understandable and attractive to children.
“This is a fascinating and unusual book for readers in intermediate grades...This book will serve as a useful reminder to both girls and boys that women have been making history in all fields of endeavor for a very long time, and that our pioneers ought not to be forgotten. 'Lexi and Marie Curie' will encourage girls, in particular, not to take “no” for an answer and to rely on their wits and ingenuity to find a solution to even the most difficult problems that life throws their way.”
Janine Benedet, Associate Professor of Law and Director, Centre for Feminist Legal Studies, UBC
