This book is a pioneering attempt to study Mughal Indian polity and the dynamics of family, kinship and caste through Riti Kal literature. The literature, in the form of drama and Braja bhasha poetry, provides evidence of regional diversities and varied patterns of historical developments in medieval north India as well as a dynamism in the political and socio-cultural spheres in premodern India. A detailed analysis of Riti Kal poetry reveals that the regions, in spite of conflicts and contestations for power, did acknowledge the Mughals as the undisputed rulers of Hind, the future India. Riti Kal poetry provides enough evidence to highlight the transformation that had begun to take place in the traditional forms of relations during this period. While the poets continued to advocate the conventional role of women in family and society they also depicted, with sympathy and understanding, the individuality, liberty and sexuality of the fairer sex.

War in 1914 had been widely anticipated, but few on either side were prepared for the fury and carnage that modern weapons could unleash. It was the soldiers of the European armies who had to face the full force of this maelstrom, and none acquitted themselves better than the men of the British Expeditionary Force, both regulars and reservists alike.
A group of old soldiers, with service under their belts in India and South Africa, have settled back into civilian life as best they can, but will soon find themselves facing the might of the German army across the canal at Mons. This is to be the start of three months of hardship, suffering, terror and violent death, culminating in the crucible of the First Battle of Ypres, and the start of the trench warfare which will characterize the rest of the war.
The men will face it all through their comradeship, humour, and their pride and stubbornness as professional soldiers. Few might survive, but their example would set the standard for the armies which were to follow.

Manifestations of History highlights the significant, yet underestimated, place of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in socio-cultural and historical studies of the Indian Ocean region. British penal colonialism, the Japanese occupation during the Second World War as well as the post-Independence migration of Partition refugees, repatriates and migrants from all over South Asia left a deep imprint on local society. These features render the islands an ideal sociological showcase for the study of historical manifestations. Multiple castes, classes, communities, religions, and languages reflect the social complexity of South Asia and reveal entanglements between the British Empire, the Indian nation-state, and destination countries of South Asian overseas migration.

This book on the city of Agra makes a close examination of this medieval Indian urban centre that grew into a multifunctional town completely outside of the supposed agenda or impact of Turkish rule, as well as European influence. This enquiry uncovers possible deliberations in the evaluation of a settlement that was unknown in the sixteenth century, but which was to develop into an alternate prominent political centre in northern India.

Natasha remembers little from her Russian childhood, other than the lingering nightmares of her mother's tragic death. So when someone close to her hands her a one-way ticket to Russia, along with the deed to her family farm, and then is brutally murdered, she has little confidence about what awaits her in that distant land. With doubt and uncertainty, Natasha has no choice but to leave her life in America for an unknown future. Once overseas, the terrifying facts as to why she was really summoned home come to light. Fact one: Monsters do exist. Fact two: The only thing keeping those monsters out of the world is an ancient mural hidden below her family's farm. Fact three: The mural that keeps the evil out of the world is falling apart. The final fact: It's up to Natasha to restore it and save the world from a horror unlike anything seen before. Luckily, Natasha isn't alone in her mission. Three Russian Knights are tasked with protecting her from the demons as she restores the mural. And leading the Knights is the handsome and strong Anatoly, who seems to be everything Natasha could hope for in a man. Unfortunately, there is one huge problem. Her Knights are forbidden from having relationships with the artists they protect, and Anatoly is a hardcore rule follower. But rules cannot stop the way she feels. When a horrifying demon breaches the barrier and pulls Anatoly inside the mural, Natasha can't help but charge, once again, into the unknown-this time to save the man she secretly loves. Now on the demons' turf, she risks her own life to free the very one who is supposed to be protecting her. Little does she realize that if she should fail, it could mean the destruction of the very last barrier shielding mankind. Will Anatoly refuse Natasha's help? Or will he finally realize, when love is at stake, the rules will be broken.

Aimed at addressing the lacunae in academic publications on women dancers in India, The Moving Space highlights the idea of the ‘space’ created, occupied and negotiated by women in Indian dance. It initiates a conversation between dance scholarship and women’s studies, and brings together scholars from a multidisciplinary background, emphasizing that research and practice have roots in both these specific areas. This book takes dance as a critical starting point, and endeavours to create an inclusive discourse around the female dancer and the historic, gendered and contested ‘space(s)’ that accommodate or are created by her.

A comprehensive chronicle of the labour movement in British Columbia.
The BC tradition of fighting back against unfair pay and unsafe working conditions has been around since before the colony joined Confederation. In 1849 Scottish labourers at BC’s first coal mine at Fort Rupert went on strike to protest wretched working conditions, and it’s been a wild ride ever since. For years the BC labour movement was the most militant in the land, led by colourful characters like Ginger Goodwin, murdered for his pains, and pull-no-punches communist Harvey Murphy, who brought the house of labour down on himself with his infamous “underwear speech.”
Through years of battles with BC’s power elite and small victories followed by bitter defeats, BC unions established the five-day work week, the eight-hour day, paid holidays, the right to a safe, non-discriminatory workplace and many more taken-for-granted features of the modern work landscape. But unions’ enemies never sleep and, well into the second decade of the twenty-first century, battles still go on, like that of BC teachers in their long and ultimately successful struggle to improve classroom conditions. On the Line also highlights the role played by women, Indigenous and minority workers in working toward equality and democracy in workplaces and communities.
In prose that is both accessible and engaging, accompanied by over two hundred archival photos, Mickleburgh tells the important story of how BC’s labour organizations have shaped the economic, political and social fabric of the province—at a cost of much blood, sweat, toil and tears. This volume is the most comprehensive overview of labour’s struggle in BC and will be of particular interest to union members, community activists, academics and readers of regional history.
Long-standing journalist Andrew Nolan – born one of the most monogamous men on the planet, but having successfully made his open marriage work for nearly a decade – here serves as a tour guide to the world of open relationships and polyamory. Rather than getting bogged down in the myriad of definitions for non-monogamy, Nolan focuses on the emotional tools and experiences one needs to make an open marriage succeed.
This is, in short, the book Nolan himself wanted to read as life events compelled him to transition to an open marriage – a work that details the potential glories, logistical hassles and emotional Burmese tiger traps one encounters on the path to non-monogamy, and empathizes with monogamous-minded people as they struggle to become something more through openness. Moreover, Opting Out of Monogamy strives to aid those who are open / polyamorous by nature to better appreciate and understand what their monogamous-leaning partners are experiencing.

We have all, at one time or another, known the suspense of the interviewee's chair. Very little has been said, however, of life on the other side of the desk. For the uninformed employer, the job interview is a long-distance run, rather than a brief, anxious sprint. There is often nowhere to turn for guidance on how to make the right call, and how to deal with the wrong one. In The Official Recruitment Guide, James Bode Eden offers his recollections, drawn from a managerial career on four continents, as a guide to how best to approach this unenviable task. The reader will find a collection of stories, divided according to theme; Bewares denote pitfalls to be avoided, Principles suggest some tenets to hold to, while a collection of Amusing Stories relates those moments of working life that obstinately defy classification. ORG can be read either as a reference book or a wry narrative of the managerial existence. From moonlighters to industrial spies, by way of homesick expatriates and eccentric night owls, all business life is here, and a little more besides.

In a world becoming increasingly sensitive to the failings of narrow empiricism this book offers insights into creative and meaningful approaches to research. It explores ontological epistemology of participation as a new pathway of research as well as conceptualization of reality which goes beyond conventional methods such as participant observation and the familiar dualisms between qualitative and the quantitative and epistemology and ontology. Drawing on the editor's wide ranging network of creative scholars at work in the world of academia and beyond Pathways of Creative Research: Towards a Festival of Dialogues brings together twenty-five insightful chapters each rich in insights into the role that creativity and dialogue play in the work researchers do. Drawing on both Western and Eastern approaches as part of a festival of dialogues, the book offers pathways of creative research that strives to understand the work of the non-dual in self, culture, society and the world. Pathways of Creative Research, the first volume in the trilogy of creative research which includes the subsequent volumes, Cultivating Pathways of Creative Research: New Horizons of Transformative Practice and Collaborative Imagination and Research as Realization: Science, Spirituality and Harmony, is not only a pioneering but also a monumental effort in our world of scholarship, thinking, practice and collaborative imagination which raises some of these vital and deeper questions of theory and practice and then overflows to an epochal and epic quest for rethinking and regenerating life, culture, society, polity and our fragile humanity.

Pet Logic - Do you choose to have a pet ... or an experience?
Each person seeks connection, we are always looking to belong, to love and be loved. Pet Logic, Nicole Birkholzer’s stunning little debut, helps us find that connection. Birkholzer, an animal intuit, mindfulness expert, and former executive coach, spent 15 years writing down the powerful lessons of her trade. In Pet Logic, she has gathered 12 of her most inspiring essays and whimsical anecdotes to show us how we can make our lives richer by viewing the world through the lens of the pet kingdom.
Sometimes quirky, often tear-jerking and laugh-out-loud funny, Pet Logic is a must-read for anyone who has suspected our bond with animals has far more wisdom to impart than we ever imagined.
The book contains the fabulous bonus of helping the reader live in the present, something masters down the ages have been encouraging us to do. In doing so, we find a connection that makes our lives so much more rewarding. Pet Logic won’t just enrich your rapport with your pets, it will connect you more deeply with yourself and your fellow humans.
Anyone who hears the word “Playboy” probably thinks immediately of a scantily clad co-ed reclining across the staples of one of the most successful magazines of all time. However, Playboy is more than a magazine and a corporate empire. Since its beginnings in 1953 it has become one of the world’s best-known brands and an entire lifestyle unto itself.
When Hugh Hefner opened the first Playboy Club in downtown Chicago in 1960, he gave regular guys the key to participate in his own personal dream. The original Chicago club was quickly followed by venues in Miami, New Orleans, and New York. Each club was designed as a veritable showbiz multiplex, including a variety of bars and dining rooms as well as several stages on which veterans and up-and-coming entertainers performed. Performers included personalities such as Tony Bennett, Robert Goulet, Sonny & Cher, and even the Rolling Stones.
Many books have been written about the Playboy Empire, the Bunny experience, and ultimate Playboy Hugh Hefner, but until now no book has covered Playboy’s impact on popular entertainment and the fabulous cadre of performers who took to the stages of the mythic Playboy Clubs. Playboy on Stage tells this story from myriad points of view, in the words of dozens of artists, musicians, singers, and comedians, as well as those involved behind the scenes.
Plunging the Ocean engages with the voluminous content of the Kathāsaritsāgara, a text meant for courtly entertainment, locating the various points of its retelling. The volume weaves gender as the discursive mesh with various themes such as caste, class, occupations, control and flow of resources or wealth, religious practices, sexuality and power structures to highlight the discourse of the text itself.
When Harry bought a car he could not have foreseen the problems it would cause him. Unable to get reasonable mileage from it he investigates and discovers a false petrol tank has been fitted and hidden inside are dozens of bars of gold...
Where more weak-willed men would keep the treasure for themselves, Harry does the decent and honourable thing and hands it in to the authorities. Unfortunately the weak-willed man who hid the gold there years before finally comes looking for it.
A campaign of harassment and attempted violence forces Harry on the run from the man's gang and, it would appear, the authorities themselves who are suspicious about the whole story.
Halfway across Europe in post-war Germany Harry thinks he's safe staying with a local couple and their beautiful daughter, but the bad luck that has dogged him since his unfortunate purchase is about to find him once more.
What do aging beauty queens, modern day cowboys, aliens, and Roy Rogers all have in common? Route 66.
Photographer Wes Pope's book, Pop 66 is comprised of amazing photographs made entirely by pinhole cameras (camera obscura) constructed from pop cans. This technique, more than a century old, helped the author create a dreamy and surreal visual narrative for his adventures along America's legendary Route 66. "Perhaps this is the best way to photograph a road trip. The images are blurred and distorted, just like memories. And the sequence conveys something like the America of our dreams."
- Claire O'Neill / NPR
"The iconic Route 66 is this peculiar accumulation that wasn't planned. It was lots of different people, each working away at their American Dream, dotting an almost endless stretch of two-lane highway. The end result is not what any one person would have ever imagined. Utility poles and broken-down concrete. The boarded up dreams of Mom and Pop castles. All put together, these little pieces add up to create the American Parthenon. And so I hope it goes with these photos. You plan and plan and then you pull the little flap and see what happens."
